Has cold weather got you shivering? It’s the dreaded Nor’easter season, when heavy storm systems move up the coast to chill the bones of every New Englander. Even if your heater is working well, did you know that improperly insulated windows can cause you to lose a large portion of the heat through the glass? It’s true! The best way to ensure that you’ll stay nice and toasty is hermetically sealed New Hampshire windows! A hermetic seal means that your window is airtight and impervious to air and gas. If you’re worried you might be losing heat, call us to install insulated New Hampshire glass.

Heat isn’t the only thing you can lose if your New Hampshire windows aren’t properly insulated. You’ll also be losing money! The more heat your house needs to reach the temperature on your thermostat, the higher your bills will be. Investing in quality insulated windows now could mean big savings later. Portland Glass can help you find the perfect window for your energy needs.

Don’t let the cold drag you or your wallet down. By installing New Hampshire windows insulated with a hermetic seal, you can be confident that your house will be warm no matter how cold it is outside. As you may know, Manchester, New Hampshire is the largest city of northern New England, just twenty miles from the Massachusetts border, fifty-eight miles from Boston, and an hour from the lake region and the seacoast. The City of Manchester is the economic engine of the state, housing multitudes of high-tech, web-site, information-processing, insurance, finance, wholesale, distribution, retail, and service businesses, and more than 200 manufacturing firms. Many of these businesses, including Portland Glass, actively welcome and support new residents to the Manchester area. Portland Glass serves the entire Manchester, New Hampshire area from its location in nearby Hooksett, just moments away from Manchester city limits.

The Greater Manchester Region, originally the home of various Native American groups, was settled by European farmers in 1722 and then by the world’s largest cotton milling operation (of 64 mills) in 1838 after a canal and lock system opened a trade route from Boston to Concord. Currently, this region includes Manchester (the state’s largest city) and nine other nearby communities, each with its own unique lifestyle, personality, and housing styles. They provide a close-knit blend of working and living options—from the city—to the country, farm, and homestead.

As far as transportation goes, the Manchester area is served by the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) that has passenger, freight, and U.S. Customs services, and routing with most major airlines; fleets of commercial trucking and courier companies accessing the state’s major north/south and east/west highway systems (Interstates 93 and 293, the F.E. Everett Turnpike, and Routes 3 and 101); the Guilford Rail freight Systems south to Boston and north to Montreal (and connections); the Portsmouth port 45 miles to the east; regular bus service; and reservations-only taxi and limousine service throughout the city.

The Manchester area boasts a college consortium and university system that includes fifteen institutions of higher learning, including universities, state colleges, community colleges, a pharmacy and health science college, an institute of art, and a school of human services. Manchester boasts 900 acres of parks, playgrounds, and public spaces; boating and fishing on scenic Lake Massabesic; numerous golf courses and kayaking on the Merrimack River; and double-A baseball, AHL hockey, and AF2 football teams. The medical community offers four major health facilities, walk-in clinics, 700 licensed physicians, non-profit health organizations, and advanced neonatal and heart surgery care facilities. Manchester is also home to the majority of New Hampshire’s primary cultural institutions.

New Hampshire is a business amd family-friendly state: it levies no state sales or personal income tax (business profits tax is 8.5%), no property tax on equipment and machinery, no inventory tax, and no capital gains tax, while also offering investment tax credits, job tax credits, and research and development tax incentives. As well, the City of Manchester helps businesses develop industrial sites. With the state’s early and sustained history of manufacturing, it’s no wonder Manchester City provides such a business-friendly environment and thriving community.  If and when you do decide to move to Manchester, or if you’re already a proud resident, Portland Glass is here to serve you with home improvement glass installation and all home and auto glass needs.

If you’re in need of windshield repair or windshield replacement in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont, you may want a little good advice and direction. Good advice from auto glass specialists isn’t difficult to find, but bad advice from non-professionals isn’t either.

For instance, on one online forum, a participant asked others what she should do to stop a windshield crack from spreading until she could get it replaced. Some of the inadequate answers included: self-repairs using clear plastic and a special, cancer-causing glue, and using Super Glue, Crazy Glue, adhesives, clear nail polish, liquid porcelain, or windshield-repair kits; drilling the glass at the end of the crack; etching around the crack with a diamond or glass cutter; covering the crack with cello, packaging, or duct tape; tinting the windshield; avoiding bumps or potholes; parking in the shade to avoid heat; avoiding defrosting in the winter; replacing with a junkyard windshield; not using the car; and buying a motorcycle helmet and baseball bat so as to turn the car into a stock car.

It’s really important to stop a crack from spreading; else the windshield will ultimately need to be replaced. The rule in some states is that if the crack is more than six inches from any edge of the windshield, it is illegal to drive the vehicle. Even if a person had no insurance to cover the fix, a windshield repair fee is so much smaller than the cost of replacing the windshield. And why would a person spend even $1 on a self-fix when inexpensive professional fixes are available. In fact, many insurance companies will waive the deductible, which could give you a free, professional repair.

Do-it-yourself windshield replacements are also not a good idea because improperly installed windshields often do not do the jobs they’re supposed to do–they pop out during accidents. Besides keeping wind, weather, rocks, bugs and such out of your vehicle, a properly installed windshield is necessary to act as a safety device in keeping the roof from collapsing in a rollover accident.  Also, a properly installed windshield is necessary to keep deployed airbags inside the vehicle for protection, and to keep vehicle occupants inside the vehicle during an accident. Windshield installations done by properly trained and certified technicians who use only OEM-specification windshields and OEM adhesives are the only ones you can truly depend on for your safety. That is also why it isn’t wise to install a junkyard windshield in a vehicle.

Portland Glass in Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire provides superior G-12 guarantees on all windshield installations, stating that if your new windshield is broken or damaged from a normal road hazard within a year of the replacement date, they will repair or replace it. They also warrantee the installation of rear windows and windshields for as long as the vehicle doesn’t change ownership. So don’t waste your time with temporary and inadequate fixes, contact Portland Glass for a professional and guaranteed windshield solution.

Portland Glass has a better way to safely remove ice from windshields and auto glass. Gradually heat the glass inside while scraping and brushing ice from the outside.

1. Check to make sure no ice or snow is obstructing the vehicle’s tailpipe. If it is covered, the ice or snow must be removed to prevent the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning inside the vehicle.

2. If the car door is frozen shut with ice, pour cold water to gradually melt the ice and use a plastic ice scraper to carefully chip a crack in the ice around the door seal and the lock. Do not try to “unseal” the door by using a hair dryer, cigarette lighter, ice pick, screwdriver, propane torch or portable heater.

3. Start the vehicle. Turn the defrost heater setting to high and the fan setting to low (this prevents the windshield from heating up too quickly) to warm the glass. Wait at least five minutes for the car to start to warm up.

4. Use a plastic ice scraper and a soft plastic bristle brush or broom to clear the ice. A squeegee also helps.

There are de-icing products on the market that may shorten the time it takes to melt the ice, but they have mixed results. The most important thing is to plan some extra time to remove the ice before traveling. Portland Glass can repair or replace the glass if it breaks, but it can’t fix people if they get hurt.

Portland Glass has been busy helping New England families with their home improvement glass needs for fifty years. If you’re thinking of making some window or other home improvement glass changes to your home in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont, you’ll be able get all the help you need from the experts at any one of thirty-eight locations. If you’ve gotten only as far as thinking—Yeah, new windows, that sounds good—let me offer you a teeny bit more direction.

If you’re a home improvement glass-purchasing novice, you might want to familiarize yourself with the proper window-buying technical terminology. You might want to investigate any of the following or other window terms you’re not familiar with: single hung, double hung, twin double hung, casement, single-unit, multi-unit, awning, hopper, rolling, sash, frame, single-lite, double-lite, three lite, picture window, glazing,  ENERGY STAR, half screen, full screen, grid, and argon. Explanations of various window types and glazes are all available right here on PortlandGlass.com.

So, are you thinking of replacing some of your windows …or all of them? Are you thinking vinyl, or customized wood? Do you want to put roughly the same style of windows in that you already have, or might you want to make a big change in your window styles? Do you want basic windows, or something more exotic, such as: awning windows that tilt outward from the bottom, perhaps below a picture window;  custom designer-shaped windows, possibly in triangles, octagons, full circles, roundtops, or other shapes; maybe a garden window (with single-hung side windows) at your kitchen sink for growing herbs or houseplants; half-screen or full-screen rolling windows for your porch, family room, or add-on room; or a unique combination of components in a bay or bow window or two, with elegant head and seat boards. You might even be considering a patio room in order to increase your living space for three seasons out of the year. You could convert a patio, a porch, or a deck into a new living space with a vinyl patio room system.

Doors are another important part of your home improvement glass renovation possibilities, including sliding patio doors, storm doors, shower doors and tub enclosures, and even garage doors. Other glass products for renovation consideration include: custom-edged or beveled mirrors, plate glass, or picture glass for anything from tabletops to wall coverings; fireplace glass; laminated or tempered safety glass; Plexiglas, including scratch-resistant and colored; and custom-sized glass blocks in a variety of finishes for showers or glass-block walls.

When you’ve progressed past the information-gathering stage of your renovation plans, you’ll want to deal with a reputable, safety-conscious, proven leader in the home improvement glass industry in your area. You’ll want quality products and the best warrantee coverage. And you’ll want to work with certified home improvement glass installation specialists. Portland Glass in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine offers all of this from their thirty-eight convenient locations.  The experts at Portland Glass are more than happy to help you pick the perfect replacement windows for your needs.
